Communications associate joins Healthy NewsWorks team

Candace C. Smith, an experienced print and broadcast journalist with additional background in teaching and librarianship, has joined Healthy NewsWorks as communication associate.  

Candace grew up in South Philadelphia and Delaware County and earned a bachelor’s degree in English with a double minor in creative writing and theater at Syracuse University. She also earned a master’s in arts management at City University of London.  

Her writing has appeared on Essence.com, in Broadway World, Pro Wrestling Illustrated, and other publications, and she has been an audio producer and content writer for ABC Radio in New York.  

During the pandemic, she worked as a substitute teacher and librarian at schools in Delaware County.  

“I’m excited about working for Healthy NewsWorks, because it’s giving me an opportunity to do writing and editing and to be a vessel for change,” she said.  

She has long focused on healthy eating and exercise for herself and sees Healthy NewsWorks’ emphasis on building health awareness as an important opportunity area for young people.  

“My first visit to a Healthy NewsWorks classroom really opened my eyes,” she said. “The students were so into the discussion about health reporting. I wish all classrooms could be like that!” 

In her Healthy NewsWorks role, Candace will take on many facets of communications, including working with our reporters to develop writing and video skills.  

“Candace brings a wide range of experiences and skills to our organization that will help us deepen our impact on our communities,” said Marian Uhlman, Healthy NewsWorks executive director. “We could not be more delighted.”
