HNW students mentioned in Senate testimony
March 18, 2022

Two Healthy NewsWorks student reporters recently were mentioned during congressional testimony, and are now part of the Congressional Record.

Daniel, in fifth grade at East Norriton Middle School, and Katelynn, in fourth grade at Gotwals Elementary School, recently interviewed Dr. Tami Benton, psychiatrist-in-chief at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, about how to handle emotional issues. Their interview will appear in Healthy NewsWorks’ forthcoming book, How We Heal: Leading Healthy Change in Our Communities 2022.

A few days after their interview, Dr. Benton testified before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee about protecting youth mental health and identifying and addressing barriers to care.

At the conclusion of her testimony on February 15, Dr. Benton shared “an experience that reflects my hope for the future.” She said Daniel and Katelynn “asked me, ‘When can normal feelings like depression and anxiety become bad for you?’ These are questions that all Americans should be asking at this time and should be able to answer.”
