Vote for Marian Uhlman as a Health Hero!
September 4, 2018

September 2018 … Healthy NewsWorks is excited to announce that Executive Director Marian Uhlman is one of ten semifinalists for the 2018 Be Well Philly Health Hero Challenge.

The Health Hero Challenge is sponsored by Philadelphia magazine and Independence Blue Cross to recognize people and organizations that encourage others to participate in a healthy and active lifestyle.

You can help Marian earn one of the top awards and as much as a $10,000 donation to Healthy NewsWorks by voting from now through Tuesday, October 2. You can vote once a day! Three finalists will advance to a second round of voting in November.

[October update: Voting has concluded. Results will be available soon!]

Engaging kids as health reporters
Marian is a former reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer, where she specialized in health issues. She cofounded Healthy NewsWorks in 2003 with a second-grade teacher and since 2006 has led its expansion to more than 30 elementary and middle schools in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Through the program, student reporters in elementary and middle school learn journalism fundamentals in such areas as research, interviewing, distinguishing fact from opinion, and writing clearly. Then they encourage healthful living by producing accurate and relevant health publications and other types of media for their fellow students, families, and the wider school community.

Healthy NewsWorks leverages a network of mentors, teachers, administrators, and community partners to carry out its mission. Students interview and write about prominent health professionals as well as artists, environmentalists, government officials, community organizers, and other health proponents.
