May 2018 … Exercise, don’t smoke, and drink water instead of sugary drinks were among the popular themes for student artists participating in the 2018 “Help Your Heart” poster contest sponsored by Healthy NewsWorks.
Elementary and middle school students in Healthy NewsWorks schools in Norristown and Philadelphia were invited to illustrate heart-healthy activities for children.
Students were asked to illustrate one of these messages that can help kids keep their hearts healthy:
- Eat fruit and veggies instead of salty snacks
- Eat fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth
- Drink water instead of sugary beverages
- Don’t smoke
- Exercise 60 minutes a day
Volunteers from Vanguard in Valley Forge, Pa., judged hundreds of entries from nine schools on the heart-healthy themes, creativity, artistic quality, and neatness. Some of the top selections are shown above.
Heart health has been a primary focus this year for the Healthy NewsWorks student media program. Students have learned about foods and exercises that make their hearts stronger and how to reduce stress and avoid bad habits that can create heart problems during a person’s life.
